Philanthropy

"To those whom my life may touch in slight measure, may I give graciously of what is mine"

We are so proud of the service we are able to give back both on a national and local scale. We work nationally with speech and hearing organizations such as the Starkey Hearing Foundation, an organization that travels the world to provide hearing aides to those in need. In 2015, Delta Zeta nationally pledged 5 million dollars in 5 years to the Starkey Hearing Foundation. We also work with the Gallaudet University, a university specially catered to those with speech and hearing disabilities to provide them with the best possible learning experience. Locally we work with the Appalachian Communication Disorders Clinic, providing services to people in the Boone community with communication impairments. Our national service project is the Painted Turtle Camp, a summer camp for children with terminal illnesses to enjoy a summer full of fun activities. Our alumnae Elaina Young and Hannah Czajkowski have volunteered there in the past.

In 2018 we had the highest amount of community service hours in the Appalachian greek community and the second highest amount raised for our philanthropies in the Panhellenic community. We are able to do service and raise money by volunteering at the University Bookstore at the beginning and end of each semester. We also hold events throughout the year such as our spring "Get Cheesy with DZ " a nacho and quesadilla dinner and a second event in the fall each year. This past fall it was "Twist and Shout for Starkey", a pretzel bar that helped us raise money for Starkey. Our sisters also participate in many on campus service events such as Relay for Life, the Martin Luther King Junior Challenge Day of Service, Dance Marathon, Blood Drives, and more. We are proud of all that we are able to give back as an organization each year.
